What motivates developers?

Pick people who are passionate as well as technically and theoretically competent
Right team look for potential as well as experience

Developers want to write code not write requirements or project manage – make sure that they are only doing this as much as is possible. Agile methodologies advocate this. Developers are not QAs or business analysts

Developers like a framework in which they spend their time cutting code where they have clear goals and roles.

Creating software is an art therefore good developers want to be challenged and creative. “Software craftsmen”

Developers don’t like to be asked when is something is going to be ready and especially while you are standing over there shoulders

Developers like to make assumptions and therefore you need to coach them to ask questions

Like any employee you need to understand what makes your developers tick, what are they challenged by, what areas are strengths and how they can improve both technically and softer skills.

Closely related some knowledge of their life outside of work, taking an interest will mean you will understand them much better.
